The Sniffr app
Privacy policy
Effective October 7, 2026
This policy explains how Sniffr handles personal information in its iPhone app and related services. It applies to the initial United States launch. It does not cover the separate early-access waitlist.
Information we handle
Depending on the features you use, Sniffr handles:
- Account information: your email address, user ID, authentication and session information, and limited information provided by the sign-in method you choose.
- Owner and dog profiles: your display name, profile photos, bio, general area, headline, interests and favorite hangout, plus dog names, breeds, ages, photos, profile details, preferences, discoverability settings and co-owner relationships.
- Activity and communications: swipes, matches, saved places, messages, read state, message-photo attachments, meetup details, invitations, reports and blocks.
- Location: if you choose current-location features, the app sends device coordinates to perform the nearby request. Sniffr stores a rounded dog-area coordinate for discovery. Nearby-place requests can also transmit device coordinates, and MapKit receives the search region or place text you submit. Saved places include the place's coordinates. Other users receive an approximate distance, not your device coordinates.
- Device and service information: push-notification tokens and limited technical, security and request records used to authenticate requests, deliver the service, troubleshoot failures and prevent misuse.
We collect information when you provide it, use app features, grant an iOS permission, or use a sign-in provider. Sniffr does not currently include third-party advertising or analytics trackers. Because the app does not perform browser-based cross-site tracking, browser “Do Not Track” signals do not change how it operates.
How we use information
We use information to create and secure accounts; operate owner and dog profiles; provide nearby discovery, mutual matching, chat, photo sharing, saved places and meetup coordination; deliver notifications you enable; maintain co-owner access; investigate reports and enforce blocks; screen supported image uploads; prevent misuse; troubleshoot the service; and answer support and privacy requests.
Sniffr is a dog-friendship service for adults 18 and over. It is not a human-dating service. Please do not submit another person's information unless you have permission to do so.
Visibility and service providers
Discoverable dog profiles and the selected owner information connected with them can be seen by other Sniffr users. Profile and dog photos are stored at public URLs. Messages and private message photos are intended for the relevant conversation participants, but recipients may save or share what they receive. Reports are available to authorized safety operations. Blocks hide and prevent interactions but do not erase conversation history by themselves.
We use Supabase for authentication, database, storage and realtime services; Vercel for hosting and technical request logs; Google when you choose Google Sign-In; Apple for push notifications and MapKit searches; OpenAI to screen supported image uploads before storage; and Postmark to send our monitored inbox a receipt containing an internal report ID, not the report's content. These providers process information to perform services for Sniffr and may also handle information under their own platform terms and privacy notices. We may disclose information when reasonably necessary to respond to valid legal process, protect users or the service, investigate misuse, or address a transaction involving the service.
Image screening and safety reports
Supported profile and message images are sent to OpenAI's moderation service before Sniffr stores them. If screening is unavailable, the upload is not accepted. This automated check does not mean that every item of user content has been reviewed.
The release app asks for your permission before sending a selected photo for AI screening. You can decline and continue using features that do not require a photo, or withdraw that permission in Settings before a future upload. Withdrawing permission does not undo processing of photos you already sent.
Safety reports are saved for operator review. We aim to begin reviewing a submitted report within 24 hours. This is a target, not a guarantee, and complex matters may take longer. Sniffr is not an emergency service. If anyone is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services.
Retention and deletion
We keep information while your Sniffr account is active and as needed to provide the feature for which it was collected, maintain security, resolve reports or disputes, and protect the service.
In a conversation you can edit a message you sent within 15 minutes, unsend a message you sent within 2 minutes, delete any message from your own view, and react to or reply to messages. Unsending clears the message text and any photo for everyone in the conversation and leaves a notice that a message was unsent. Editing replaces the earlier text and marks the message as edited; we do not keep the earlier version. Deleting a message from your view hides it for you only and does not remove it for other participants. A message that was reported before it was edited or unsent may still be referenced by that report. Conversation recipients may have already saved or shared what they received.
To open chats quickly, the app keeps your recent messages on your device, protected and locked while your device is locked, and removes them when you unsend or delete a message, block someone, sign out or delete your account.
You can delete your Sniffr account in the app. The current deletion flow removes Sniffr product records and queues cleanup of unreferenced profile and dog-photo objects and eligible private message attachments. If a dog has another owner, its profile and media can remain for that owner. Deleting Sniffr does not necessarily delete a shared Lunara sign-in identity or information associated with another Lunara product.
We aim to act on a verified deletion request within 30 days. This is a target rather than a guarantee. Information may remain longer where another user retains it, where media remains associated with a co-owned dog, in isolated backups or technical records, in a service provider's systems, or when reasonably needed for security, safety, fraud prevention, dispute handling or valid legal process. We do not promise a specific backup or provider-deletion period.
Your choices
You can edit available profile fields, change discoverability and notification settings, manage iOS location and notification permissions, block users, and delete your Sniffr account in the app. You may also ask to access, correct or delete your information, or withdraw an optional permission. We may ask for information needed to verify and fulfill the request. Some choices can limit or disable the related feature.
Security and policy changes
We use authentication, authorization checks, separate storage for private message media, upload validation and other safeguards intended to protect information. No service can guarantee absolute security.
If we materially change this policy, we will post the revised version here, update its effective date and provide additional notice when appropriate.
